Pilot Light Safety
If your pilot light repeatedly goes out or is difficult to light, it could indicate a safety problem. DO NOT attempt to fix the issue yourself. Trying to light a faulty pilot light can lead to a fire or explosion. Instead, it is strongly recommended that only a trained professional relight a pilot light that has gone out. What to Do If You Smell Gas or Suspect a Leak
A gas leak is a serious safety hazard. If you detect the smell of propane, follow these steps:
No flames or sparks! – Immediately put out all smoking materials that are open flames. Do not operate appliances, light switches, telephones, or cell phones, as sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or fire.
Leave the area immediately. – Ensure everyone evacuates the building or area where the leak is suspected.
Shut off the gas supply. – If it is safe to do so, turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank. To close the valve, turn it clockwise (to the right).
Report the leak. – Once you are at a safe distance, call your propane retailer right away. If you cannot reach IAS immediately, dial 911 or contact your local fire department.
Do not return until it is safe. – Stay away from the area until an IAS technician, emergency responder, or qualified professional confirms that it is safe to re-enter.
Get your propane system inspected. – Before using any propane appliance, have your entire propane system checked by an IAS propane expert or a qualified technician to ensure it is leak-free and safe.
